Gut directed hypnotherapy is a specialist form of hypnotherapy used to support people living with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and the difficult relationship that can develop between digestive symptoms, stress and anxiety.

Living with unpredictable digestive symptoms can affect much more than physical comfort. It may influence where you go, what you eat, how you travel and how confident you feel being away from home.

Over time, worry about symptoms can itself become part of the cycle.

Jennie Kitching offers personalised hypnotherapy for people who want to explore a mind-body approach to managing IBS alongside appropriate medical care.

What is gut directed hypnotherapy?

Gut directed hypnotherapy uses relaxation, focused attention and carefully structured suggestions relating to digestive comfort and the communication between the brain and gut.

The approach does not suggest that IBS symptoms are imaginary. The brain and digestive system communicate closely, and stress or heightened alertness can influence how bodily sensations are experienced.

Hypnotherapy aims to support a calmer response to those sensations and reduce the anxiety that can become associated with them. Jennie's existing article on hypnotherapy for IBS provides further background.

What might sessions focus on?

Your experience of IBS is individual, so Jennie will first discuss the symptoms and situations that affect you most.

Work may focus on relaxation, reducing anticipatory anxiety, developing calmer associations with digestion and increasing confidence around situations that have become difficult because of IBS.

The objective is not to promise a cure or replace medical assessment. Persistent or changing digestive symptoms should always be discussed with an appropriate healthcare professional.

Hypnotherapy can instead form part of a broader approach to symptom management and wellbeing.

IBS, stress and the gut-brain connection

People with IBS often notice that symptoms can become more troublesome during periods of stress or anxiety. Equally, worrying about access to toilets, eating away from home or experiencing symptoms in public can create additional stress.

This can become a difficult feedback loop.

A physical sensation triggers worry, the worry increases tension and awareness, and the digestive symptoms can feel even more intrusive.

Sessions can focus on helping you feel less threatened by bodily sensations and more confident about managing everyday situations.

A personalised mind-body approach

Some people seek gut directed hypnotherapy primarily because of digestive discomfort. Others find that anxiety about symptoms has become equally disruptive.

Jennie's wider mind-body healing resources explore the relationship between emotional wellbeing and physical experiences, while sessions themselves remain focused on your individual needs.
